Jersey War Tunnels

No holiday to Jersey is complete without a visit to the War Tunnels to learn about one of the most difficult periods in the Island’s history.

The Jersey War Tunnels are no ordinary museum; they are an unforgettable and moving experience, serving as a permanent reminder of the German occupation of Jersey.

Formerly known as Höhlgangsanlage 8 (Ho8), the tunnel complex is dug deep into the hillside within St Peter’s Valley and was originally intended to be a barracks and ammunition store for the occupying forces.

It took nearly three and a half years to build, with the work being carried out by forced and slave labourers who were brought to the Island from all over Europe.

Today, the War Tunnels tell the compelling story of life in Jersey under occupation and feature a series of thought-provoking galleries looking at the diverse experiences of all those who live through it, whether Jersey, British or German.

Outside the Tunnels you can enjoy a quiet moment in the Garden of Reflection or a woodland walk along the historic War Trail.

At the end of your visit refresh yourself in the beautiful surroundings of the Museum’s bar and café, or visit the unique sweet shop.

Jersey War Tunnels Shuttle Bus

Be transported back in time from the moment you set foot on the vintage bus. The on-board commentary by star of Bergerac and Midsomer Murders, John Nettles, will bring to life the German Occupation of Jersey, recounting tales of the ways of life for those on the Island at this time and much more. Your outbound journey will educate and prepare you for your day at Jersey War Tunnels, and of course, transport you in true vintage wartime fashion!

Once you have soaked up the experience of Jersey War Tunnels, the shuttle will meet you at the entrance to escort you back to Liberation Square, St Helier – with a few more stories and interesting facts along the way.
